One should never alter their daily oral fluid intake drastically. The most important factor is to understand the concept of “what goes in, must come out”. The body is producing urine continuously as you eat and drink – a process that slows during sleep when the body releases an anti-diuretic hormone, so we make the most urine during the waking hours.

Recognition of the types of fluids we consume is important. For instance, caffeinated beverages are going to make the body produce more urine at an accelerated rate because of the diuretic effects of caffeine. Never avoid drinking to reduce how often you need to catheterize. This will result in dehydration, especially in the hot summer months.
