An enlarged prostate – also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – is the most common cause of bladder problems in men as they get older.
Having an enlarged prostate affects men in different ways. They may find it difficult to start urination or feel the need to urinate frequently. Some may find it difficult to empty their bladder properly – this is called urine retention.
There are two types of urine retention
This develops over time and is usually painless. But the pressure of the urine can slowly stretch your bladder muscle and make it weaker. Chronic urine retention can damage your bladder and kidneys if it isn’t treated.
This is when you suddenly and painfully can’t urinate – it needs treating straight away.
Emptying your bladder regularly with a catheter can help avoid any complications that can be caused by urine retention.
Cathing provides many men who have an enlarged prostate with the control they want over their bladder symptoms.
