Why does current technology increase the risk of UTIs?

Hydrophilic coated catheters can stick, and damage the delicate urethra. The coatings are slippery on the way in, but they can become sticky on removal as they dry.1

Irritation and damage to the soft urethral tissue can allow bacteria to colonize the space created6,7 causing discomfort and bleeding and leading to a higher chance of getting UTIs.1,4

Queen's University Belfast

Scientists conducted a comparative study to understand the effect catheterisation has on the cells of the urethral lining.2

A range of hydrophilic catheters were tested alongside GentleCath™ with FeelClean™ Technology using a model designed to mimic the delicate urethra.2

Hydrated catheters were passed over a layer of real human cells, replicating insertion and withdrawal during catheterisation.2
